about

‘I lost my mum, Daphne, in June 2022. We were told she was dying in March, so I sat with her every day for three months and watched the person I had always aspired to be drift away to wherever it was she was going.
She had, amongst other things, mixed dementia; but she didn’t break character once during this time, and I am still awestruck with the way in which she dealt with her illnesses and her death. It’s been suggested that ‘Unspoken Word’ is a tribute to her, but I wouldn’t have the words to explain my mum to anyone. She was so much more than a little old lady; and, to be honest, I’d rather keep her to myself. In any case, I like to think you can hear all there was to know of her in her vocal on the second track.
Alan Symonds had passed away in very different circumstances many years before, so Marc was able to tune into his own experiences around the death of his dad, quietly sending me a wide-ranging series of tracks I could write to, depending on my mood. In a lot of ways, he has been leading me through the various stages of the grieving process. So although the lyrics are mine, Marc’s language has always been music and ‘Unspoken Word’ is as much an exploration of his experience of loss as it is of mine.
It was only as we were listening to the final mixes that we realised: ‘Unspoken Word’ isn’t an album about death - it’s an album about love.’

about

Dead Anyway England, UK

Dead Anyway sets the dark lyricism of Kate Arnold against the music and soundscapes of Marc Symonds.
"A phenomenal mix of poetry, electronica and guitars. A heady brew of dark, glitchy head-messing wonder".
